The Bang on a Can People’s Commissioning Fund (PCF) concert is one of the most anticipated and reliable launching pads for emerging composers in New York and beyond. Founded in 1997, long before crowd-funding became the norm through Kickstarter and the like, Bang on a Can’s PCF has pooled contributions of all sizes from hundreds of friends and fans and since its inception has commissioned over 40 works of music. This year, the Bang on a Can All-Stars will give the world premieres of works by three PCF-commissioned composers: Alvin Lucier, Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Parry and Daniel Wohl, in addition to a performance of Julia Wolfe’s driving classic from 1994 Lick, and David Lang’s haunting death speaks featuring the Bang on a Can All-Stars with special guest Shara Worden.

The Knights | Blueshift

The Knights

The Knights unveils its new chamber music series, “Blueshift,” in the intimate, informal setting of SubCulture, a new venue for eclectic music in New York City’s NoHo neighborhood. Members of the ensemble will take turns curating and performing in concerts that showcase the diverse array of creative influences from which they take inspiration. The inaugural program, curated by The Knights co-founders, Colin and Eric Jacobsen, juxtaposes new contributions to the repertory by contemporary composers William Bolcom, Giya Kancheli, and Andrew Norman with a pair of 20th-century chamber classics: Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony, arranged for quintet by Webern, and the Suite from Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale.

Unsuk Chin

Born and raised in 1960s South Korea, Unsuk Chin developed a one-of-a-kind musical voice from an early age. Largely self-taught, she received her first formal training at Seoul National University, where encounters with avant-garde Western forms, sounds, and techniques made a big impression. She moved to Europe and studied with Ligeti. Her music—colorfully orchestrated, rhythmically vital, and influenced by studies in electronics—has since won the prestigious Grawemeyer Award and been championed by orchestras, new-music bands, and conductors worldwide.
