Bodiless | Gabrielle Herbst

Gabrielle Herbst

Gabrielle Herbst

Bodiless is the first evening-length opera by Gabrielle Herbst. Premiering at Roulette on April 8th (8pm curtain), the work, with libretto by Iceland-based Canadian writer Angela Rawlings, takes its inspiration from French feminist writer Hélène Cixous’ dream diaries Dream I Tell You. Vocalists Ariadne Greif, Lucy Dhegrae, and Gabrielle Herbst will be joined by Contemporaneous and led by conductor David Bloom. Costumes, lighting, and set design will be combined in Puerto Rican/Brooklyn-based designer Zaida Adriana Goveo Balmaseda’s unique original costumes, which weave a web of lights into each outfit.

The Tri-Centric Presenting Series: The Trillium Chamber Players perform Anthony Braxton’s Composition No. 46, plus the James Fei Ensemble

Over the past decade, James Fei has worked in several distinct streams of activities—notated works for contemporary music ensembles, improvisations, live electronics and sound installations. Hysteresis brings together collaborators from these various fields, not so much to find a common ground among the possibilities, but to make a new work that retains the complexities and intensity of the individual components. Anthony Braxton will conduct and perform with a chamber ensemble featuring the improvising soloists from his Trillium J opera, leading the group through a set of language music improvisations and works including Composition No. 46 (1975).

Liza Lim | Composer Portraits

Liza Lim

Liza Lim

The Australian composer Liza Lim is slowly becoming better known on this side of the world, with commissions from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Ensemble Intercontemporain, and Ensemble Modern, among others. Her compositions reflect an interest in Australian Aboriginal culture. Mother Tongue was inspired by the impending extinction of a native Aboriginal language. Invisibility also has its roots in Aboriginal thought, but is more practically concerned with the physical properties of the cello, using both traditional and prepared bows to unlock myriad new sonic possibilities.
