About I CARE IF YOU LISTEN

I CARE IF YOU LISTEN is an award-winning multimedia platform for living music creators. We seek to produce high quality short-form content that prioritizes artists who have been historically underrepresented and marginalized in the Western classical music space. Through a unique blend of critical, promotional, and multimedia offerings, ICIYL has positioned itself as a comprehensive informational hub for the new music scene and a platform for discovery. Our current priorities are to:

  • Support a diverse team of music critics dedicated to discovering new artists and promoting racial equity in new music
  • Amplify the voices of artists and their impact through dynamic storytelling
  • Provide career and artistic support for music creators through “how-to” guides and educational resources

Job Description

The ICIYL Contributor Team produces regular concert reviews, album reviews, interviews, and essays, as well as helping to identify new artists and projects for coverage. The expectations for this position are:

  • Contribute an average of one article per month
  • Respond to pitches from the Editor-in-chief within 24 hours
  • Turn in a completed first draft within 72 hours of the date of the performance, date the album was received, or date the interview was confirmed
  • Address requested edits from the Editor-in-chief within 24 hours

Compensation

The ICIYL Contributor Team are independent contractors paid on the following honorarium scale:

  • Album reviews and Concert reviews: $250 per article (600-800 words)
  • Interviews: $100 per article (introductory paragraph and five pre-written questions)
  • Essays and Festival round-ups: $500 per article (1,200-1,500 words)

How to Apply

To apply, please fill out our online application by October 30, 2020. In addition to answering a couple of questions, you will also need to upload a PDF of a short writing sample (under 1,000 words) that demonstrates your ability to write and think critically about music (or arts/culture, if you are new to music journalism).
